Flight 227 from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg carried a very special passenger on Monday, February 21, 2011...
In an exclusive seat all its own was the plastic picnic container that housed my new kidney. It came from the Thomas E. Starzl Transplant Institute of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. I will always remember that President's Day, for it was the day I was scheduled to have my kidney transplant surgery. At Harrisburg Hospital, the medical staff began hustling, as I was not quite ready for the Operating Room (OR). The anesthesiologist came in to talk with me, an IV was started, and down the hall I went on my grey, steel gurney to the OR. There, I would await my new kidney, arriving via courier service from the airport. (Excerpt from Prologue)
